The Blinding of the Inhabitants of Sodom by Carle van Loo

This dynamic and fluently painted picture is an important and recently rediscovered composition from Carle Van Loo’s early career, remarkable for its brilliant colouring, dramatic lighting and soft brushwork. Listed by Rosenberg and Sahut in 1977 as a lost work known only from a sketch by Gabriel de St Aubin in the margin of the 1773 sale catalogue, now in the Musée du Petit Palais, Paris, the painting was rediscovered in the 1990s .

Sodom or Sodoma , in the Bible, the principal of the Cities of the Plain (the others being Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboiim, and Zoar, which was spared) destroyed by fire from heaven because of their wickedness. The cities were probably located near the south portion of the Dead Sea.
